Electrical and electronic industry

Glass is used in the electronics industry in many different forms, such as TV screens, fluorescent lamps and glass lasers. Chip production would be impossible without glass. Glass substrates are used to manufacture the flat panel displays which are found in flat screen TVs, monitors and notebooks. Glass fibre also plays an important role in the electrical industry. The world wide web is spun from these fibres and glass fibre optic cables are what keep traffic on the move. Diode lasers are another application for glass in the electronics industry. Diode lasers enable the supermarket checkout scanner to read the bar code on a carton of milk or a bottle of shower gel, the DVD player to read a DVD and the light exposure process in a laser printer. The German glass industry supplies an important component for this laser: high quality micro lenses made of special optical glass.
