The glass industry's contribution to climate protection
Glass manufacturers have reduced their power consumption level by 77 percent since 1970. This positive development is largely due to the introduction of more efficient production technology.
Today's melting furnace technology and the industry's adherence to statutory emission limits have resulted in remarkable emission reductions. The glass industry's efforts to reduce CO2 emissions are documented in regular monitoring and inspections by independent institutes. It hasn't just made progress over recent years in reducing its carbon footprint, but also in minimising NOx emissions - particularly by implementing measures that have a direct impact on the combustion process in the furnace (primary measures). The German glass industry is by no means one of the big environmental polluters, since it only accounts for approx 0.7 percent of total NOx emissions in Germany. On the contrary, its products contribute to the conservation of energy and it works with a material that helps to conserve raw materials and energy because it can be recycled any number of times.
